On Wednesday (29 July), the European Defence Agency (EDA) selected five European companies to advance to the next stage of its Sentinel Strike Challenge, a competition designed to test emerging loitering munition technologies under realistic operational conditions. The initiative aims to provide EU Member States with reliable evidence on how these rapidly evolving defence technologies perform before any future investment decisions are made.
Real-world testing
The Sentinel Strike Challenge attracted more than 140 expressions of interest from organisations across Europe. Following an initial assessment against technical, operational and safety criteria, the EDA selected the five highest-ranked submissions to progress to the field-testing stage.
The finalists are Helsing (Germany), Destinus (Netherlands), C-Astral (Slovenia), UAVision (Portugal) and Spirit Aeronautical Systems (Greece). Each company will receive a €30,000 Stage 1 prize before competing for a share of €1.8 million in Stage 2.
The selected technologies are loitering munition systems, a type of attack drone capable of searching for a target before striking. However, advancing to the next stage does not mean these systems are ready for deployment or procurement. Instead, it gives the companies the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities under more demanding operational conditions.
Testing technology before investment
During the EU OPEX26 campaign, military personnel from EU Member States will assess not only whether the systems function as intended, but also how they perform throughout the full mission cycle, how resilient they are in contested environments and how they compare with competing technologies.
The challenge is not intended to award procurement contracts. Instead, its objective is to generate evidence that defence ministries can use when considering future capability development and investment decisions.
Next steps
The experimentation campaign in Portugal will determine the overall winners of the competition, with the results expected to be announced in 2027.
